It’s on a remote island on the west coast of Canada that Ryan Walker went for “Voices in the wilderness”. As a talented photographer, he has, in this series, wanted to convey a message. That of protecting what we have, “by conserving our natural resources, landscapes and life support systems” he explains. The photographs depict the lives of people in search of a deep connection to the natural world around them and want to have a different way of life. Inspiration for this series came when Ryan was previously exploring the connection between land and identity between 2010 and 2015, when he created an intimate photographic series around a young man, Jon, as he lived “off the grid.” This remote island community is quite special, however, it is Walker’s hope that it can become a model for other communities across Canada, and the world, in exploring alternative ways of living a more connected life to our planet.
