Harry Smith (1923-1991) was an American filmmaker, painter, musicologist, occultist and anthropologist. His experimental movies have influenced a generation of cinephiles and his book Anthology of American Folk Music (1952) allowed a folk music revival in the 50-60’s. Besides his artworks, Smith is also known for his vast curious objects’ collections.

Through the book Paper Airplanes: The Collections of Harry Smith: Catalogue Raisonné, Volume I (published by J&L Books/Anthology Film Archives), available on Amazon, we find 240 pages on his collection of paper airplanes. Photographer Jason Fulford captured 251 airplanes that the artist has conserved until his death and that he has collected for 20 years, in the New York City’s streets.
