The New York-based Chinese artist has just launched “Sleepwalking in the forbidden city” as part of the “Odyssey and Return Home” exhibition, which will be held at the Palace Museum in Beijing until February 5, 2021.

Inspired by the fireworks that historically would have taken place in the Forbidden City to mark the Lunar New Year, this is his first ever virtual reality artwork, which imagines a spectacular daytime fireworks ceremony with a dreamlike atmosphere.

The installation in the exhibition consists of three elements: an alabaster model of the Forbidden City, created in five months in collaboration with craftsmen from the artist’s hometown; a richly layered drawing of firepower; and an RV film, which brings all these pieces together.
