Gas holders used to be found all around England. However, today, there are only a few of these large structures remaining and they are under threat of demolition.

Gas holders were used to keep natural gas in England. The architectural photographer Richard Chivers decided to create this project to keep a forever record of these once plentiful structures.

“Three or four years ago I read an article in the news that most were to be demolished so I decided I would try and capture some of them before they were lost forever,”

Since most are now gone, the images Chivers has captured to date are now historical records.
