Born in Tehran, Newsha Tavakolian began her career as a photojournalist in the Iranian press before joining New York’s Polaris Images agency. Through its series Iran, which has been controversial at the Prix Carmignac, the self-taught photographer portrays young Iranians in the grip of the contradictions between an increasingly modern society and a revolutionary Islamic ideology.
