Photographer Florian W. Mueller focuses on the enthralling expressions of taxidermy animals in his latest series, Anima. Inspired by a Walt Whitman poem, his portraits show off each animal’s characters, as intense in death as if they were still alive. The project aims to restore some remaining dignity to these long-dead creatures, kept intact for the amusement of humans. It also carries a cryptic message: that if we continue to treat nature, animals and plants as we do now, the future could be as empty and artificial as these taxidermy figures.
