For the Magnum Photography Awards 2016, Kyle Weeks featured the Himba population extracting liquid from Makalani palms. These very original portraits beautifully illustrate a very old tradition. The photographer decided to pay an hommage to these people thanks to this portrait’s series.
Although the Makalani palm is a protected tree and this practice has been banned, the Himba believe that it is their right to continue the tradition defying Western countries laws.
