Born in Slovakia but currently living in Rotterdam, Tomáš Libertíny enjoys exploring the potential and beauty of nature through his artistic practice. For his project “Made by Bees” started in 2005, he worked with bees, in order to reproduce classical sculptures, with natural beeswax. To do so, the artist printed 3D models of three artworks : the Bust of Nefertiti, Michelangelo’s “Brutus”, and a jug inspired by the famous Nolan amphora from the Met Museum, a piece of Greek pottery. He then invited tens of thousands of bees to create their hive from these different patterns, and gave them time to bring these entirely natural and durable works to life, guiding them from time to time.
