Viviana Troya is a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art and exhibits her latest work, Hatchery until February 24 at the Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition at Peckham’s South London Gallery.

This work has several levels of reading: at first glance it looks like an industrial shelf full of egg boxes waiting to be packed. But on closer inspection, it is actually a multitude of ceramic figurines of the Virgin Mary placed side by side.

This work denounces both mass culture, whether in terms of media production or mass consumption, but also refers to the way in which humanity links the natural to the cultural, as the figure of the Virgin embodies this duality.

This work also denounces the excessive exploitation of animals by the agri-food industry… An artist to watch closely!
