Food is one of Miyazaki‘s movies recurrent elements (more globally, it is a Studio Ghibli’s important aesthetic aspect). Food, is a vector of important concepts and it defines characters and feelings enriching the story. Accurately prepared, beautiful and tasty, or opulent, abundant and excessive, meals immediately identify a personality. The way a character eats, tells a lot about the character himself.
From the gigantic feast of the king in “The Cat Returns” to the meticulous and raffinate cooking of Umi in “From up on Poppy Hill” or the symbolic candies in “Grave of the Fireflies”, food in Miyazaki’s world is a crucial detail. Also, food draws prove the virtuosity of the drawer.
