Matthew Simmonds is a talented sculptor who creates various works in marble or stone with a recognizable style. His inspiration comes from a lifelong fascination with stone buildings. Drawing on his skills as a stone carver, Simmonds’ central theme is architecture and in particular, sacred architecture. In his work, he plays with small-scale architectural spaces. The solid stone from which the sculptures are carved is open. It thus reveals complex internal worlds in which “the changing viewpoint and light play a strong role in defining the sculptures” says the sculptor, still on his website. “Drawing on the formal language and philosophy of architecture the work explores themes of positive and negative form the significance of light and darkness, and the relationship between nature and human endeavor” says he.
