These oversized non-edible fruits actually denounce our society’s culture of waste and excess. New York-based artist Kathleen Ryan has designed these faux mouldy foods starting with a 70 cm wide polystyrene base. She then adorns it with pearls to create intricate fruit-like pieces of art. By the end, it seems like someone has let this food decay.

The use of precious and semi-precious stones is a real contrast to the repulsive moulds it represents. Lemons, oranges and peaches come here to question us about the notion of beauty, ugliness, repulsion and of the, our mass-production society.
