Maggie Michella is an art director from Indonesia and currently based in Los Angeles. Through “Inside Outside of Culture”, she talks about the growing racism in the United States. The exhibition is composed of 25 images of Mona Lisa with different eyes, inspired by the origins of 5 Asian countries: China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand.

By highlighting the diversity of faces, the artist wants to educate the public about diversity in Asia that has often been ignored. With this work, Maggie Michella wants to fight the stereotype “All Asians are alike” which has caused discrimination in many areas. Using an icon such as Mona Lisa invites viewers to take a fresh look at a well-known painting on which they probably already have prejudices.
