Oumou Sangaré is an icon of African contemporary music. She also is a key figure of afro-feminism and an unmissable diva inspiring women all around the world.
Her new clip, Kamelemba (womaniser), takes place in a near future, into a post-brutalist architectural scenario. It is a realistic “afro-futurism” style mixed with the codes of a Western urban aesthetic. References meet each others creating a joyful and ensorcelling dance inspired by two different cultures that are becoming closer and closer.
Choreography is inspired by the traditional Congolese male dance competition, the “Sapeur”. However, in Oumou Sangaré’s video, girls steal the place of their male friends overpassing the notion of gender. It is now up to women to be a part of this habit. Women in the clip are strong and independent, emancipated from patriarchy. Lyrics denounce openly mannish cowardice and lies making fun of “womanisers”.
Outfits are audacious and contemporary, featuring combative and self-confident girls. The contribution of Avoc Paris, Veja and Centre Commercial is remarkable.
Choreography has been conceived by Carmela Loanga. For the viewer, it is a spectacular trip into this urban landscape, immersive and intense. The Swaggers Dance Crew gives rise to a magnetic performance.
The clip has been realized by Chris Saunders, a virtuous of street image, impertinent and funny. With his fashion background, he sublimates clothes, costumes and personality elements, creating an emotionally strong experience.
A choral work that announces full of good surprises for the new album Mogoya. Release party on June, the 27th at La Maroquinerie, Paris.
