For the release of Luc Besson’s latest movie produced by Europacorp, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Flore Maquin made three splendid illustrations about this science-fiction work. Graphic designer specialized in cinema, the French artist is used to work with rich cinematographic universes. She designs movie posters in vibrant and colorful styles. For this monumental space opera, she took an interest in the title character Valerian and his famous partner Laureline as well as in Bubble, a polymorphous cabaret dancer played by Rihanna. This adaptation of the French comic strip takes us to a futuristic world inhabited by extraordinary creatures. In the 28th century, the spacio-temporal agents Valerian and Laureline are in charge of maintaining order in the inter-galactic universe. During their perilous mission, the duo of heroes will have risk everything to save the City of the Thousand Planets and with it the whole universe.

Flore Maquin captured the essence of this futuristic universe and transcribed it into her digital illustrations. Using a vast range of inspirations going from old sci-fi posters to Mass Effect video games by way of robot illustrations from the 1980s, she presents posters which adapt the very dense graphic universe of the film with a retro style. The artist was also influenced by the original comic strips by Jean-Claude Mézières, creator the characters. The incredible work on the colors and light reflections echoes the peculiar light of science-fiction sagas. Indeed, the illustrator, who works with Photoshop, first thinks of her work in terms of shadows. Then come the colors and the details which give the poster their final style.

Under the digital brushes of the artist, Valerian and Laureline, the characters played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, seems more resolute than ever to protect the inter-galactic balance of the world. Their suits are adapted from the film’s costumes and announce the extraordinary visual experience that the movie will be. Flore Maquin also capture the powerful magnetism of Rihanna’s gaze in her portrayal of the bewitching Bubble.

The galactic and futuristic world of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be in theater on July 21. In addition to Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne and Rihanna, Ethan Hawke and Clive Owen will be part of the cast.
