Largely inspired by graffiti of the streets of Lisbon’s Bairro Alto and Barcelona’s Barri Gotic of the 90s, Nuno de Matos, also known as Matox, creates lively abstract paintings rife with arabesques and spirals that are part of an urban calligraphy.
These tags feel almost musical in nature, thanks in no small part to the movement that leaps across the canvas. Matos layers drips, lines and blasts of colour in a vibrantly expressionistic way that excites the eye.
