Strobist

Julie in the Park Setup

Strobist Information: Most Friday nights, I can be found at our local roller hockey club (Rink Rats) taking photos of the practice sessions and the Friendly Friday Night league games. The lady who runs the club, Julie, also runs Tuesday night skate fit sessions. Basically this is a fitness training session on roller blades for the hockey players. As there is a state tournament coming up in a few weeks she has also started running supplemental Sunday morning fitness sessions. These start at the ungodly hour of 7am before the day starts to get too hot. In a moment of madness I volunteered to come along to one of the sessions and take a few pictures (I'm really not a morning person). Normally I would just take the camera to something like this, but having missed out on the strobist cross light and sculpt exercise I decided to throw the lights into the car in case there was a suitable opportunity to use them. As it turned out, it was an extremely bright sunny morning, but with some low menacing storm clouds along one horizon. As the session progressed, one of the exercises was to be pull ups from the cross bar of a goal post. This allowed me to position one SB-28 with a translucent umbrella behind the goal post so that the sun acted as a back light on the person doing the pull ups and the storm clouds were visible on the horizon. With everything in place I just snapped away as each person performed there pull ups. When I got home, I loaded the pictures into Lightroom and started to process them. It was at this point I remembered an article I had seen on Scott Kelby's Photshop Insider Blog about producing the Dave Hill Look in Lightroom. I decided to have a play around with these settings on this picture to see how it looked. While I will be the first to admit it actually looks nothing like a real Dave Hill picture, it does give it an interesting look so I decided to upload it. Of course, this being my first foray into using my SB-28's outdoors, it immediately started to rain while I was stood in the middle of the football field. I think I managed the 100 yard dash with camera and light stand in a little over 30 seconds! Surely an Olympic standard setting time!!! :) Picture here: Julie in the Park Original untreated picture here: Skate Fit Sunday Session Learn how to light: www.strobist.com
