Sty Wars Episode IV - A New Hock Strobist Information: The idea for this shot came about by accident (quite literally). The two hair buns being worn by the pig were part of the costume for Ly and Keoula in the Geisha Ninja Zombie Killer photos. After the shoot, Keoula had left them on her beside table where they had been sitting for a few weeks. A few nights ago I put a glass of water on the table and being the incredibly clumsy person I am, I managed to knock it over. Of course the two hair buns managed to soak most of it up as I desperately tried to mop it away. Anyway, I need to move the buns out the way and just plonked them on the nearest thing that would hold them up, which just happened to be the money pig. The second I had done it it struck me as funny and Pigcess Leia was born!!! :) So, for the photo, Pigcess Leia is sat on a sheet of plexiglass which is suspended by four chairs and two wooden poles. On the left and right are a couple of large home made softboxes. I also added a rear rim light to help pick the hair out against the dark background. Under Leia is the fibre section from a fibre optic novelty lamp that I picked up for $10 from Tandy's. I pulled the fibres out of the base and made a hood that would fit over the head of a Sunpak 383. I put the whole thing in a section of light stand box so that the fibres spread out under the plexiglass. I also added a blue filter in the hood to give them a blue glow. I draped a piece of black velvet round the whole thing to hide the flash and the box. The fibres did glow blue, but not as much as I had hoped, so I added a second Sunpak 383 in front and underneath Leia, again with a blue gel to add a bit more colour. Unfortunately, there were not enough fibres in the lamp to spread out in a perfect circle so I concentrated them round the front. I did touch up a few stray hairs and fibres in Pain Shop Pro, but apart from that, this is pretty much straight from camera. Picture here: Pigcess Leia Learn how to light: www.strobist.com
