Ok, I hope you're sitting comfortably for the explanation of this one. This is a Lego recreation of Richard Prince's 1989 rephotograph "Untitled (Cowboy)". When I checked last it was the 6th most expensive photograph in the world (sold at Christies in New York for $1,248,000 in 2005). The original (shown here), if you can call it that, was a rephotographing of Marlboro cigarette advertisments cut from magazines (which were originally photographed by Sam Abell). My version uses a print of Prince's version (horse removed) as the backdrop. So this is a rephotograhping of a rephotograph featuring the original rephotograph, I think that's self-referential enough. Can I have my million dollars now please? Setup shot here.
