Each year, the Australian Institute Of Professional Photography (AIPP) organizes several paper-based photography competitions to involve its members. Unfortunately, the year 2020 proved to be a complicated year due to COVID-19, so the group had to innovate in a new way to unite the Australian photographic community. It is in this spirit that the AIPP Silver Lining Awards were conceived.

2020 is a year unlike any we have experienced in our lifetime. Circumstances have forced the association to change the way it works.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AIPP Epson State Awards have unfortunately been cancelled and planning for the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) is currently suspended. The Awards Committee sees this as an opportunity to do something special, to channel the challenges we all face into a common drive for creative energy. As an art critic and winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, Jerry Saltz says: “Isolation promotes art”. “So let’s ignore the clouds and focus on the bright side” says the jury.

The IAPP Silver Lining Awards aim to do just that, with an online program including image reviews and feedback sessions, judge training, and a national competition culminating in a multi-state print exhibition. Here is an overview of the winners of this competition, which rewards the best Australian photographers.
