The studio Ponti Design has created a concept of an autonomous two-storey tramway with a futuristic interior design and designed to limit possible post-covid contagion to encourage Hong Kong residents to resume public transport safely after the peak of the pandemic.

The product design studio – founded by Hong Kong-based Italian designer Andrea Ponti – wanted to offer a modern version of existing public transport to better adapt it to today’s world, where prevention of future pandemics is essential.

“This is particularly important in the densely populated city of Hong Kong, where social distancing is difficult to achieve,” said Ponti. The new tramway is a covid-safe project, but one that keeps the human and aesthetic aspect necessary to avoid making social distancing a source of collective stress.
