This series is a story about the narrow balance of destruction and regrowth. The scenes were captured in Lanzarote, Spain after a powerful volcano eruption destroyed everything in its path. Matter of fact, the eruption lasted nearly six years when it happened in the 18th Century.

The lava ripped through all the fertile land and made it nearly impossible to inhabit. It changed the environment and shaped the island’s future permanently. Not only did it create over one hundred volcanoes on the island, it also formed craters and canyons which created an outer-space type landscape.

The photographer, Chiara Zonca, highlighted the complete catastrophe and, at the same time, the slow-growing rebirth of the island’s life.
