Shot entirely with an analog Leica camera during a trip to China, Elizabeth Heyert’s series The Outsider is a collection of Chinese amateur photographers snapping portraits of their loved ones. The enthusiasm and zeal of the Chinese for snapping portraits can be explained by their past: the Cultural Revolution banned and destroyed family albums, and today’s generation seem to be making up for it. Being in unfamiliar territory allowed Heyert to capture these authentic portraits of a culture so foreign from her own.
