“Danny’s photos are a treasured artistic record of the people who initiated a movement from within their own neighborhood and this work links that exuberant time to the larger history of LGBT people. This book is a very welcome addition to our enduring collective memory.” – Gus Van Sant

Daniel Nicoletta has been a leading chronicler of the LGBT civil rights movement over the last 40 years. His images are intimate, strong and moving memories from this time, in which a lot of people fought together to change society and enhance freedom. Today, all his cliches are available in a same book called “LGBT: San Francisco“.

Nicoletta was especially a close friend of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the world. He portrays a charismatic and determined leader, and the movement he animated starting from the quartier of Castro, San Francisco, a true symbol of LGBT culture. After Milk’s murder in the City Hall, one year after his election, Nicoletta kept taking pictures of this incredible historical moment, portraying demonstrations and describing an atmosphere that is now iconic.

“Perhaps it is helpful to remember that the majority of the people depicted in Nicoletta’s photographs—especially in the years prior to the digital deluge—did not necessarily grow up surrounded by the kind of imagery found in this book,” Chuck Mobley says in the book introduction.

An historical and important book that brings to life the story of a minority to turn it into a collective memory.
