Elaine Mayes is currently a Professor Emerita in the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Her photographs have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum, de Young Museum and the Smithsonian Art Museum, among others.

Today, the Joseph Bellows Gallery, in La Jolla, exhibits  her historical cliches of the famous “summer of love”. 50 years after the mythical movement that brought social, cultural and political changes, the photographer shares her intimate photographs of this period. The portraits feature youth counterculture in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, showing a spiritual atmosphere of love, sharing, camaraderie, joyfulness and optimism. Elaine Mayes works are nostalgic and inspiring, sublimating a golden age of freedom of expression. June 10 – August 26, 2017.
