The cartoonist and illustrator Jillian Tamaki grew up in Calgary and attended the Alberta College of Art and Design. Author of the graphic novels SKIM and This One Summer, written by her cousin Mariko Tamaki. She is also the author of SuperMutant Magic Academy, a book which collect all her webcomic of the same name. She worked for a multitude of magazines, for exemple The New York Times Book Review, book covers, posters and packaging. She also collaborated for the storyboard of Adventure Time.
Her drawing is delicate, spreading a sense of lightness and elegance. Evoking the ephemeral and aerial Asian paintings, Tamaki’s art is also very telling and strong, thanks to a perfectly managed balance between light colors and black elements (details, shadows and outlines). A soft and highly narrative drawing style mixing artistic cultures and elements.
