Icy Prospects is a series by Finnish artist Jorma Puranen, based in Helsinki. It’s a series of “frozen” photographs, that was born into Jorma’s spirit thanks to his readings of stories and tales dealing with expeditions in the Northern Europe, in the XIXth century. These pictures, looking like paintings, are printed on a frozen surface through which we can see a polar landscape reflecting.

His works have a historic value (plus the artistic one) because they show the past of arctic regions and pictural representations that are linked to it. Jorma Puranen focuses here to the notion of territory, without getting into a documentary. Away from him the idea to produce a readable picture, but on the contrary, he wants to place an unexpected element between the viewer and the picture : here the look and the viewer will be taken by a block of ice, the reflection seen above the landscape.
